About This Place

Nestled in the bustling heart of Midtown Manhattan, MR. SUN stands out as a distinguished Chinese restaurant, specializing in authentic dim sum and classic Cantonese dishes that captivate both locals and visitors alike. Conveniently located at 48 W 48th St, just steps from Rockefeller Center, this vibrant spot invites diners to indulge in an array of expertly prepared flavors that honor traditional cooking while embracing a modern touch.

The moment you step inside MR. SUN, you’re greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere that balances casual comfort with subtle elegance. Though the interior may lean towards a traditional setting with its modest décor, the true charm lies in the heart of its kitchen, where culinary artistry takes center stage. It’s a place where the familiar meets the exceptional—a sanctuary for lovers of Chinese cuisine craving genuine tastes in a relaxed Midtown environment.

One of the restaurant’s crowning glories is their Peking Duck half 北京烤鸭 现烤 半只, a dish that food enthusiasts rave about for its perfectly crisp skin and juicy, tender meat that melts on the palate. As birthday celebrant Noah Aris aptly described, the duck here isn’t merely good—it’s “sublime,” delivering a memorable depth of flavor that’s both richly satisfying and exquisitely delicate. This meticulous preparation creates a satisfying contrast between crispy exterior and succulent flesh, enhanced further by classic accompaniments.

Dim sum aficionados will find themselves equally delighted by MR. SUN’s selection of bite-sized treasures. The Soup Dumplings with Crabmeat burst with a savory broth that dances on the tongue, while Pig Custard Buns offer a unique blend of silky sweetness and fluffy texture. Favorites like haw gow and pork/shrimp shu mai reveal the kitchen’s masterful balance of freshness and flavor, attracting guests who relish the experience of family-style sharing at the table.

For those seeking bold and adventurous flavors, dishes such as the Chongqing Spicy Chicken and Beef with Green Chillies deliver a piquant kick perfectly tempered by skilled seasoning. Meanwhile, the Steamed Boneless Sea Bass and Truffle Beef demonstrate the kitchen’s versatility—each bite a vivid reminder of the freshness and precision infused in MR. SUN’s menu. The Roast Pork and Duck Combo and Pork Belly with Special Sauce also stand out as hearty, richly flavored options that honor classic Cantonese techniques.

Many diners also appreciate the thoughtful touches, like the quick service and suitable portion sizes highlighted by Masae Suzuki, who experienced efficient lunch pickup without compromising the quality and flavor. Meanwhile, the friendly and accommodating staff create a welcoming vibe, ensuring large groups like Noah’s birthday party feel well cared for—a testament to their attentive hospitality despite a busy dining room.

While the décor may not rival upscale establishments, MR. SUN’s real value lies in its authentic dishes served generously and consistently. The restaurant’s unpretentious setting becomes a canvas that allows the vibrant flavors of its kitchen to shine through, making every meal a fulfilling culinary journey. Whether savoring the crispy-skinned Peking duck or the complex spiciness of Chongqing chicken, diners find themselves transported by the bold, nuanced tastes that echo the richness of Chinese culinary heritage.

Summing up, MR. SUN is a Midtown gem for anyone seeking to indulge in genuine Chinese cuisine with a focus on dim sum and iconic dishes. It’s a vibrant gathering place marked by warm service, reinvigorating flavors, and classic comfort that will leave you craving your next visit. From casual lunches to celebratory dinners with friends and family, MR. SUN masterfully delivers the essence of Chinese dining with heart and passion.

I spent days researching, looking for a spot with GOOD Peking Duck for my birthday and this place was perfect! They accommodated my group of 17 guests and adapted to our needs. They made my birthday a perfect experience. The food was unique and delicious. The duck was PERFECT. It was sublime. The duck was juicy, tender, and soooooo tasty! The cake was not baked by them it was brought from a bakery I reached out to that delivers and everything went smoothly. Will definitely be back. Staff is very kind and helpful. Lots of good recommendations and explained dishes thoughtfully. Thank you!

Stopped by for a lunch on Thursday. I ordered through their website for pick up but the lady at the restaurant told me that it’s not working so I ordered at the counter, which it was good to know. I ordered lunch special of roast duck over the brown rice and shrimp roll. I just waited less than 10 minutes and food was ready. Nicely packed including utensils. Roast duck was tasty but not too oily and shrimp rolls were very good. I will go back again to stay next time!

i No problem with getting a table. We had the crabmeat soup dumplings, haw gow, pork/shrimp shu mai, Singapore noodles, spicy shrimp, Chinese broccoli, half order Peking duck, bbq platter and Sapporo beer to wash it down. The duck was fresh with crispy skin and portion was just right for 2 people. Soup dumplings were flavorful, bbq platter was on the small side but tasty, spicy shrimp were great. I've order take out before but this was the first time eating at the restaurant. I was not disappointed and will be back again.

Went for lunch with coworkers for lunar new year. We did family style and ordered a bunch of entrees. My favorites were the pea shoots, chongqing spicy chicken, har gow, and fish filet in hot chili oil. Portion size could be bigger and the service can improve a little, though the staffs are friendly. The restaurant is a bit outdated, esp the interior decor and table/seats. Also, would’ve been nice if all the entrees came out at once instead of one entree at a time, esp when we didn’t even get our rice until a bit later. We also ordered a whole peking duck which only half came out first then after we finished that one, the other one came out which we didn’t realize they split it so it was a bit awkward eating the other half at the end when everyone was basically done eating. Not sure if I’d be back to dine here but maybe order their lunch specials from time to time.

One of the best Chinese restaurants, great food, great service and fairly price located in Midtown, NYC (near to Rockefeller Center). I have been this restaurant with my family and friends so many times, and all of them have positively impressions. Service is so friendly and politely no matter the restaurant is busy or not, treat all customers same way. The overall environment of the restaurant is clean with setting up simple wooden tables and chairs, it is not a high-class restaurant, but feel comfortable. My kids are so picky but they like this restaurant so much, and recommend the food, especially Peking Duck, Stir-Fried Tiger Prawns, Salted Egg Yolk Fish Fillet, Beef Tenderloin with Black Truffle Sauce, Soup Dumplings with Crab Meat, Pea Shoots with Chicken Soup and Crispy Eel. We will definitely come back again.

Ordered lunch here via grubhub. First time eating here. My order came 25 minutes fast than initial estimated. The food was well packaged. I loved that they took care for no spills. The presentation was an A for me. Rarely do you get food delivered that didn't look as if it was thrown together. . The duck was really good. Soup dumplings were delicious. Loved the generous portion along with the Chinese broccoli. Will definitely eat here again.

We stumbled upon this restaurant while visiting the Rockefeller Center, and it’s definitely a spot you should visit for lunch! From Monday to Friday, 11 AM to 3 PM, they offer a lunch combo that includes two BBQ meats, vegetables, and your choice of soup or soda. We came for dinner, so we had to order à la carte, which is less cost-effective than lunch. The House Special Roast Pork (Char Siu) is incredibly delicious — the balance of sweet and savory flavors is perfect! The Pork Belly w. Special Sauce is also amazing. Both ends are crispy, and the center is tender. The dipping sauce complements it very well. The Peaking Duck is roasted in two batches daily (once in the morning and once in the afternoon). The plating is beautiful, and the duck tastes great! The Steam Egg Custard Buns (3) are actually salted egg yolk custard buns — rich and satisfying. The Pea Shoots w. Chicken Soup were just okay — they use mature pea shoots rather than the tender young ones, so try it based on your preference. The service was also excellent — friendly and attentive.
